Young readers triumph

After winning the Reader’s Cup Competition in 2007, Wellington Point State School followed up this year with another win in the local district.

The competition, which was held again at Calvary Christian College, Carbrook, involved various private and state schools from the south east Brisbane area.

It is organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and is held annually across the state.

Teams of students read selected books and are quizzed and rated on their understanding of the books.

As with last year, the school team coach was teacher librarian Jenny Burrows.

School principal Peter Hadfield congratulated the team and its coach.

“This second win is a tribute to the work of both the students and Mrs Burrows, who has been able to pass on her love of books and reading to her students,” he said.

Runners-up of the competition were Wynnum West State School and Redlands College.
