Quarry trucks urged to avoid school rush

14/08/2008 4:51:00 PM
QUARRY trucks should avoid using an eight-kilometre stretch of Mount Cotton Road at school drop-off and pick-up times, according to Redland City Council.

The Capalaba section of the road between Broadwater and Moreton Bay roads is home to a primary school, provides access to another two schools and contains childcare facilities.

Traffic monitoring suggests about 50 long trucks or large combination trucks travel in each direction along this part of Mount Cotton Road each day.

Council officers said this number was too small to justify introducing load limits on the road, but councillors have decided to take other steps to improve safety.

The council will seek an agreement with Mount Cotton quarry operators to avoid truck movements during 8-9am and 2.30-3.30pm on weekdays.

Mount Cotton Road's existing status as a haulage route in the Redlands Planning Scheme is also under review and more traffic monitoring will be carried out.

Karremen Quarries managing director Dick Karreman said he was always happy to discuss such issues with the council.

is the council about to ban their trucks from using the same piece of road during the same hours?? i doubt it. the school zone speed limits are in place for all traffic. the vehicles carrying quarry product are no different than a council truck, coincidently probably carrying quarry products. doesn't seem to matter about others as long as this council is seen to be politically correct. it is so easy to bash a quarry. how about doing something useful and dare i suggest, adventureous, brave even.

So what’s next, banning heavy vehicles from main roads during peak hour because some commuters don’t like sharing the roads with them? Get real. The last time I checked my registration papers, it didn’t say anything about not using the roads at certain times. We, truck operators, pay exorbitant registration charges to use the roads, regardless of the buildings built beside them. In my opinion, the most dangerous drivers around school zones are usually parents picking up their children. Perhaps the council should have an education program for mothers (in four wheel drives?!) about the danger of not paying attention while they are picking up their little darlings. The council are targeting the wrong people.
