COORPAROO slid away to beat Alex Hills Bombers by 20 points in their AFL game on Saturday on a day when even the ducks stayed inside.
Final score was 6.20.56 to 5.6.36.
The weather was terrible, with heavy rain continuing on and off all day.
The first quarter was an indication of things to come, with the ball more like a cake of soap than a Sherrin football.
The skills and running game were out the window as this was a simple slugfest with the object to just knock the ball forward at all costs.
The onballers and smaller players were finding the footy a lot, but long kicking was not an option as the ball got heavier by the minute.
At the first break the Bombers were up by 19 points, with the visitors unable to score a goal due to some classic defence by Matt Finlayson and Brent Gale.
The second quarter was scrappy and Coorparoo wasted many scoring shots to trail by nine at halftime after having 10 scoring shots to nine.
After the main break the Coorparoo side came out intent on keeping warm and started to run and managed to retain possession of the footy to go to the break with a nine point lead.
In the last quarter it was impossible to know who had the footy as all players were black from the mudpit.
Dan Loy suffered a serious hand injury that required a visit to the hospital and the boys battled on in the mud.
Both Beresfords, Troy and Jason excelled in the slop, and Frank Greenaway had his best game.
Bombers Reserve grade side went is as favourites against Coorparoo and it was clear from the start that they wanted a win.
The conditions were atrocious and the boys played hard and aggressive footy to keep their final four spot intact.
Dean Forster and Ada Roberts played like pigs in the mud and grabbed everything in their way to give the boys a great 30 point win in the mud.
Joe Graham and Rusty Hughes played their hearts out in a game that was a must win.
Coorparoo started to concentrate more on the player than the ball, and this didn't bother the Bombers who played four quarters of disciplined footy .
Final score: Alex Hills 7.19.61 def Coorparoo 4.6.30.
This weekend the boys take on University at UQ and will need a big effort to win away from home.
