Go, Bombers!

11/07/2008 10:15:00 PM
THE Redland Bombers are treating the next two weekends as like a finals series, determined to avoid the wooden spoon and then claim a high profile victim.

The Bombers, who had a bye last weekend, travel to the Gold Coast to confront Labrador knowing that victory will almost certainly ensure they can hand over the AFLQ wooden spoon that has been theirs for the last three years.

Redland beat Labrador by three goals in their only previous encounter of 2008 two months ago.

"We have focused on the month of July as one where we don't want to lose a game," said coach Matty Francis.

"We only have two matches due to byes, but we want to win both of them.

"This week against Labrador is like our preliminary final, and the following week against Morningside will be our grand final.

"We should have a settled side and will be able to get into some rhythm for the last part of the year."

All of the club's State Under 18 representatives are back after a long campaign, and Francis pointed out just how good some of those players are.

"Matt Thomson and Justin Myers have been in the Under 18s best players in all of the six games that they have played," he said.

"That is a terrific effort and as for Charlie Dixon, he will get drafted by an AFL club.

"They are three very special fellas."

Redland won three of their first eight games and played some impressive football during that time, but injuries to key players and the continued absence of the youngsters has seen them lose their last five in a row.

"It's been a pretty tough couple of months and the bye could not have come at a better time," Francis said.

"The boys were jumping out of their skins at training last Thursday night and they will hopefully be at their best this weekend."
