WITH Greg Thomas in sparkling form, and the new-look Bulldogs taking shape, there will be a fresh air of confidence when Capalaba travels to Toowoomba on Saturday.
The task will not be easy as the Raiders are in good form and have the benefit of being on their home turf.
In their first round Premier League soccer match the Bulldogs pulled off a surprise 6-1 win, but since then Toowoomba has produced far better performances.
Sitting in mid-table, they can be expected to provide stiff opposition.
The final score of 4-1 against University of Queensland at the weekend does not reflect the quality of the play.
Both sides produced an excellent passing game, but Uni had the advantage of a higher proportion of successful final passes.
Although Uni opened the scoring, they missed a couple of chances which could have given them an edge.
Despite that, Jake Sherwood was one of the first to show a glimpse of what the Bulldogs could do, and newly promoted Justin Alvisio created good work with Thomas.
Ryan Turner is now settling into his defensive role and, with Gareth King, is bringing the advantage of height and aerial dominance.
Although Uni scored first, Josh Sherwood had a good shot which curved left rather than right, and Jake Sherwood put in a top effort when he robbed the opposition of the ball then combined with Danny Ngaluafe only to see the work neutralised by an off-side call.
Then Thomas showed the expertise which won him the Golden Boot on two successive seasons in Premier League.
He read a long ball perfectly, eluded two defenders, and gave the Uni keeper no chance.
Invitation keeper Jason Kearton showed just why he has been one of Australia's best with a top save when he covered a deflection which would have beaten most.
Uni were unlucky not to pull ahead when a shot hit the cross bar, but soon after Ngaluafe was equally unlucky when the Uni keeper barely managed to turn an accurate free kick aside for a corner. Josh Sherwood's corner was on target only to see the ensuing header go just wide.
Kearton again showed his remarkable ability when he made a cracker of a save then did even better when his reflexes proved far too good for the Uni attackers bearing down on the rebound.
Uni should have scored when their forwards were given far too much room, but it was defender Turner whose header was turned on to Thomas for another touch of maestro magic.
Once again he had to elude two defenders then beat a keeper who had time to read the situation, but Thomas made it 2-1 with skilful ease.
Uni started well after the break, but their first effort was a piece of cake for Kearton, and he made short work of another good attack.
Nick Maas and Thomas are beginning to show their effectiveness up front and, with Maas recovering match fitness, this could be a great combination for the Bulldogs.
They proved effective when Josh Sherwood put a ball through to Thomas who headed on to Maas for an effortless third Capalaba goal.
Montezuma's Restaurant Man of the Match Thomas was up front again soon after when he turned in a great run and crossed into the box only to see the shot just too high for the attempted header.
Jake Sherwood put the icing on the cake with a marvellously placed long-range shot which stayed on the ground and was far too good for the Uni keeper.
The reserves did not fare so well, going down 3-0. Montezuma's Restaurant Man of the Match was Simon Collins.
Grange Thistle will take a long time to recover from their 9-0 flogging in the youth match. Nick Hamlyn and Ben McLean scored twice each, the other goals shared by Tyson Newell, Caedon Newell, Corey Devlin, Richard Sisson and Kurt McKeown. They stay on top of a tight table, with a handy goal-difference advantage over teams which still have up to two games in hand.
Saturday's games at Clive Berghofer Stadium kick off at 1.45pm, 3.45pm and 6pm.
